For Day 21 of 30 Days of Intonation, we are looking closely at a word that is incredibly common and super useful in conversations in American English:

Anyway

In today's video, you'll learn to use "anyway" for a variety of purposes:

  • to end a conversation
  • to return to your point after an interruption
  • to express annoyance at being interrupted
  • to change the subject abruptly after an uncomfortable or awkward comment or situation; and
  • to show disappointment or resignation.

You will hear native English speakers sometimes say “anyways” with an “s” at the end. This is acceptable in informal speech with friends, family, and acquaintances, but you should say “anyway” in more formal or professional situations.
